The easiest way to memorise the times tables

  1. 2٢ table: Times 2٢ means doubling: 2٢ × 7٧ = 7٧ + 7٧. Every product is even.
  2. 5٥ table: Every product in the 5٥ table ends in 0٠ or 5٥. An even number times 5٥ ends in 0٠, an odd one in 5٥.
  3. 10١٠ table: Add a zero to the number: 10١٠ × 7٧ = 70٧٠.
  4. 9٩ table: The finger trick: hold up both hands and fold the finger whose position equals the number times 9٩. Fingers to the left are the tens, to the right the ones. 9٩ × 4٤: fold the fourth finger, 3٣ remain on the left and 6٦ on the right, so 36٣٦.
  5. 4٤ table: The 4٤ table is the 2٢ table twice: double, then double again. 4٤ × 6٦: 6٦ → 12١٢ → 24٢٤.
  6. 6٦ table: An even number times 6٦ gives a product ending in that number: 6٦ × 4٤ = 24٢٤, 6٦ × 8٨ = 48٤٨.
  7. 8٨ table: Double three times: 8٨ × 7٧ → 7٧, 14١٤, 28٢٨, 56٥٦.
  8. 7٧ table: The 7٧ table is the hardest because it has no obvious pattern. Memorise only the hard three: 7٧ × 6٦ = 42٤٢, 7٧ × 7٧ = 49٤٩, 7٧ × 8٨ = 56٥٦; the rest come from easier tables by commuting.

What is the multiplication table?

The multiplication table (times table) lists the products of the numbers 1١ to 12١٢ multiplied by each other. Children usually learn it in grades 2٢ to 4٤, one table at a time.

Which table should a child learn first?

Start with 2٢, 5٥ and 10١٠ because they have clear patterns, then 3٣ and 4٤, then 6٦, 7٧, 8٨ and 9٩. The 7٧ table is the hardest; the 9٩ table has a finger trick.
